Energy sector of Mongolia earned profit for the first time in 15 years. Law on energy saving, approved in 2015, was affected to this success. According to the new law, power tariffs and renewable energy tariffs were introduced as well as the energy tariffs were indexed.
However, energy sector is facing with many issues including low investment and old equipment. Also Mongolia has still soum and villages that are not connected with electricity.
Mongolia has 330 soums. Of which Altai soum of Gobi-Altai aimag has no electricity. Remaining 329 soums are already connected with a reliable energy source.
WHY ALTAI SOUM DO NOT HAVE ELECTRICITY?
Altai soum located in Western parts of Mongolia and borders with China, Bugat, Tugrug and Tseel soums. The reason of Altai soum without electricity is its location.
D.Zorigt, Minister of Energy said that pulling cables through Altai mountains requires high cost. Therefore, it is right to establish independent energy system using wind and solar energy.
In 2016, all soums and villages of Mongolia will be connected to the electricity.
