L.Oyun-Erdene, the Prime Minister of Mongolia, made a speech at the "Port Revival" national forum 2024.
- As part of the “New Revival Policy”, the works related to the revival of the port are prioritized. The successful and effective work of the port recovery is also contributing to the recovery of Mongolia's economy. In 2023, the gross domestic product of Mongolia reached MNT 68.9 trillion, and the gross domestic product per capita reached USD 5,678 for the first time.
The balance of payments had a profit of USD 1.5 billion, and the balanced budget income was exceeded by MNT 1.2 trillion, and foreign currency reserves increased to be USD 4.9 billion. And the port revival impacted on these increases. For instance, by increasing the capacity of the port and starting the exchange trade, Mongolia has exported 69.6 million tons of coal in 2023, increasing the figure of 36.6 million tons of coal in 2019, before covid.
The port revival policy will be implemented in coordination with the regional development policy in further. It means each region needs to be a participant in international trade through its ports. As part of the regional development policy, construction work on the round road connecting the provinces will begin in 2024. Also, all ports will be connected by road. The next stage of port revival must combine innovation and artificial intelligence.
In the past three years, the passenger and cargo transport complex of the Zamiin-Uud port has been put into full operation and brought up to international standards. The port will be open 24 hours a day starting from April 1.
Gashuunsukhait passenger and cargo transportation facilities have completion of 61%.The first and fourth parts of Altanbulag port cargo transportation facilities have been put into operation. The work of the one-stop service facility of Sukhbaatar port has been completed and handed over by the state commission. The construction work of Borshoo port was completed and the expansion work of Bichit port started in 2023. In 2024, engineering infrastructure works will begin at Tsagaannuur, Bulgan and Khavirga ports.
As a result, the capacity of ports will increase by 2-3 times. Also, automatic controlled container transport has been put into operation in Gashuunsukhait and Shiveekhuren ports. In the past three years, 267 km of Tavantolgoi-Gashuunsukhait, 416 km of Tavantolgoi-Zuunbayan, and 226 km of Zuunbayan-Khangi railways have been commissioned.
